The Mater Mothers' Hospital, South Brisbane, is one of the largest and
busiest maternity and women's health hospitals in Australia. The 126-bed
Hospital provides care for more than 4,800 mothers and babies every year.
Gynaecology services are also provided for women of all ages. Gynaecology
oncology services are currently provided at the adjacent Mater Adult
Hospital, in its Oncology Unit.
Mater Mothers’ Hospital and Mater Adult Hospital are both tertiary
referral hospitals and teaching hospitals for medical, nursing, and allied
health professions, and they are involved continuously with international
research projects.
Women requiring gynaecology services may be admitted for day surgery or
longer hospital stays at the Mater Mothers’ Hospital. For gynaecology
oncology services, women usually have their surgical stay in the Mater Adult
Hospital and are generally treated as an outpatient in the Day Oncology Unit
for their chemotherapy. As well, the Mater Urogynaecology Unit specialises
in helping women with bladder and pelvic floor dysfunction.
Meeting the needs of the family is a priority for the Sisters of Mercy,
founders and leaders of the Mater Misericordia Health Services. Reg Leonard
House, situated close to the Mater, offers home-like accommodation in 17
units and one self-contained cottage for patients from outside Brisbane who
wish to have family stay nearby whilst they access health services on the
Mater complex, including the Queensland Radium Institute. The Mater
Hospitals provide public health services to all women and their families,
regardless of race, religion, or marital status.
The Mater Mothers' Hospital and Mater Adult Hospital are part of the
Mater Misericordia Health Services, which also include Mater Mothers’
Private Hospital, Mater Children's Hospital, Mater Children's Private
Hospital, Mater Private Hospital, Mater Private Hospital - Redland, and
Mater Medical Research Institute.
