Cancer of the Vagina - Diagnosis

If a woman is experiencing symptoms of cancer of the vagina the doctor will
usually perform a biopsy.
This is an operation to remove a small piece of tissue to be sent for
examination by a pathologist.
A biopsy for cancer of the vaginal will need to be performed under either a local
anaesthetic or general
anaesthetic, usually in a hospital.

Pre-cancer of the vagina

Cancer is limited to the wall of the vagina.
 | Stage II |
The cancer has involved the tissues deep to the wall of the vagina, but has
not extended to the pelvic
wall.
 | Stage III |
The cancer has extended to the pelvic wall.
 | Stage IV |
The cancer has extended beyond the pelvis or has involved the inner lining of
the bladder or rectum.
 | Recurrent |
Recurrent cancer of the vagina means that the cancer has come back (recurred)
after it has been treated. It may recur in the vagina, the pelvis or elsewhere
in the body.
