Gynaecological Surgery - Hysterectomy(G) & Salpingo- Oophorectomy

Hysterectomy is a surgical operation for the removal of the uterus(G) (womb) and sometimes other organs through a cut in the abdomen(G) or vagina(G). There are two main types of hysterectomy: total and sub-total. A total hysterectomy involves the removal of the uterus and cervix(G), while a sub-total hysterectomy removes only the uterus, leaving the cervix behind.

Germ Cell Ovarian Cancer- Treatment

Germ Cell Ovarian Cancer- Treatment

As most of these tumours arise in relatively young women or teenagers, maintenance of the woman's ability to bear children is a major issue. Fortunately, these tumours tend to be very sensitive to chemotherapy(G). This means that radical cancer operations which involve the removal of both ovaries(G) and the uterus(G) are often not needed, even if there is stage II, stage III or stage IV disease. However, in women who have finished child bearing, removal of both ovaries and the uterus is generally recommended.

Ovarian Cancer- Treatment

Treatment types

All cases of ovarian cancer can be treated.   Treatments will depend on the age of the patient, her desire to have children, the type of tumour(G) and the stage of the tumour.   There are three types of treatment that may be used for ovarian cancer: surgery, chemotherapy(G) and occassionally radiotherapy(G).
