Gynaecological Surgery – Pelvic(G) Lymphadenectomy

A pelvic lymphadenectomy is a surgical procedure for the removal of lymph nodes(G) in the pelvis, especially those that drain the uterus(G), cervix(G), fallopian tubes(G), ovaries(G) and upper vagina(G). The operation is performed by removing all the tissue (mainly fat) from along the major blood vessels in the pelvis. This tissue contains the lymph nodes to be removed.

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy can be defined as the use of physical and therapeutic modalities to increase the range of movement and strength, to decrease pain and to improve the function and lifestyle of patients. The phrase physical and therapeutic modalities refers to such things as exercises, pain relief, and electrotherapy(G), which are all tools that may be used by physiotherapists in the treatment of the physical symptoms of disease, injury and surgery.

What is Lymphoedema(G)?

Lymphoedema is a swelling in one of more parts of the body which occurs when the lymphatic system(G) does not work properly. People who have lymphoedema may notice swelling that they cannot explain in an arm or leg. The area may also feel heavy, painful or uncomfortable.
